# Datavant / Ciox / ChartSwap alternatives for law firms and health systems

*By Tavrn Team · Published 2026-10-30 · Product*

The best Datavant alternatives for requesters and for hospitals: retrieval services that cover every provider, and the release-of-information vendors that compete with Datavant.

![Illustration of a stack of medical record folders reached three ways: a network node graph, a fax machine with an envelope, and a phone handset, with clinic buildings behind.](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/97t2tbu4/production/129e9ad81f5b15d15566d172fe70a03b8a062214-1536x1024.jpg)

For law firms, health-tech teams and any other requester, Tavrn is the best of the Datavant alternatives: one authorization covers every US provider, Datavant’s network and portals included, then fax, mail, email and phone, with every outreach attempt logged and 48-hour follow-up \[1\]\[22\]. Hospitals replacing Datavant for their own release of information compare MRO, Verisma and ChartRequest \[2\]\[3\]\[4\].

Tavrn also serves health systems, research sites and insurers on the same platform, with an API and webhooks \[22\]\[12\], and publishes SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 reports on its Trust Center [\[23\]](https://www.tavrn.ai/security).

## What Datavant, Ciox and ChartSwap are

Datavant handles release of information (ROI) for the hospitals and practices that hire it, which makes it the office that answers many record requests. Requesters reach it through three front doors:

- **Smart Request.** A portal to request, track, pay for and download records across Datavant’s network of more than 80,000 medical facilities [\[5\]](https://www.datavant.com/smartrequest). Its product sheet still carries Ciox Health contact details [\[6\]](https://edelivery.datavant.com/Portal/Downloads/Smart_Request_Medical_Records_Retrieval.pdf).
- **ChartSwap.** Datavant’s Legal & Insurance vertical, serving carriers, law firms, TPAs and providers with record retrieval, medical canvassing, expert services and record analysis [\[7\]](https://chartswap.com/about-us/). ChartSwap is also the online exchange where requesters and providers trade ROI requests [\[8\]](https://chartswap.com/).
- **Partner Gateway.** A single connection into Datavant’s network for legal and insurance partners who want record requests inside their own systems [\[9\]](https://www.datavant.com/legal-and-insurance/partner-gateway).

ChartSwap holds a HITRUST r2 certification on Datavant’s Trust Center [\[10\]](https://trust.datavant.com/certifications/soc2type_1) and states SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA [\[11\]](https://chartswap.com/about-us/security/).

## Why requesters look for an alternative

Datavant’s network covers the facilities whose release of information it runs. A personal injury case or a patient’s full history usually spans more providers than that: independent practices, imaging centers, physical therapy and out-of-network hospitals, each with its own ROI vendor, portal or fax line. A firm working only through Smart Request still requests, chases and tracks everyone else separately. The question is less "Datavant or not" and more who owns the whole request list.

## For law firms and other requesters

**Tavrn.** One signed authorization covers every US provider a patient has seen [\[1\]](https://www.tavrn.ai/medical-record-retrieval). Tavrn works the networks, records vendors and portals, Datavant’s included, then fax, mail, email and phone for providers outside them, and follows up on every open request every 48 hours \[1\]\[22\]. In Tavrn’s own requests, networks, records vendors and portals return about 63% of a patient’s visits [\[1\]](https://www.tavrn.ai/medical-record-retrieval). Security: SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 reports, a HIPAA attestation and a BAA on request [\[23\]](https://www.tavrn.ai/security). Scope is retrieval; court reporting and deposition services are not part of the offer. See [medical record retrieval](https://www.tavrn.ai/medical-record-retrieval).

**U.S. Legal Support.** Retrieval teams in hubs across every US time zone, a customized follow-up system and over 1,100,000 provider relationships [\[15\]](https://www.uslegalsupport.com/record-retrieval/). SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA, as stated [\[24\]](https://www.uslegalsupport.com/security-compliance/). Retrieval sits inside a court reporting and litigation-support company.

**Lexitas.** Managed follow-ups and escalation for authorization- and subpoena-based requests, with LexitasConnect integrations to Filevine, Litify, Neos, SmartAdvocate and TrialWorks \[16\]\[17\]. HIPAA compliance is stated; no SOC 2 statement appears on the retrieval page [\[16\]](https://www.lexitaslegal.com/solutions/record-retrieval).

**LlamaLab.** Built for personal injury and mass tort firms: it finds treating providers, handles the authorization, follows up with facilities and analyzes records, with a licensed clinical team confirming proof of injury [\[18\]](https://www.llamalab.ai/medical-record-retrieval-services). No security page was found at the time of review.

**YoCierge.** A portal with YoSign e-authorization, Bates numbering and a DICOM viewer, and the widest named list of case-management integrations among these vendors \[20\]\[21\].

**ChartRequest.** Legal users submit through CaseBinder and ChartRequest’s team chases providers across a stated 12,000+ organization network \[4\]\[25\]. SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA [\[26\]](https://www.chartrequest.com/solutions/ensure-compliance-security/soc-2-certified-platform).

## For health systems

A health system looking at Datavant is usually asking one of two questions.

**Who releases our records?** The outsourced-ROI field is MRO, Verisma and ChartRequest. MRO releases records on behalf of providers, runs a requester portal with real-time status, and announced HITRUST CSF certification for its exchange platform \[2\]\[14\]\[27\]. Verisma pairs automation with staff review on every request and gives clients dashboards and audit trails; its Release Manager is described as HITRUST-certified \[3\]\[28\]. ChartRequest runs a provider-side ROI platform with SOC 2 Type II controls \[4\]\[26\].

**Who collects outside records for us?** Collecting records from other providers for care, transfers or research is a requester job, which ROI vendors do not do for you. Tavrn requests from every US provider under the patient’s signed authorization \[1\]\[29\]. See [retrieval for health systems](https://www.tavrn.ai/medical-record-retrieval/for-health-systems).

## How to choose

1. **Name your side of the request.** Releasing your own records points to MRO, Verisma, ChartRequest or Datavant. Requesting other providers’ records points to a retrieval service; start with Tavrn [\[1\]](https://www.tavrn.ai/medical-record-retrieval).
2. **List the providers in a typical case.** Count how many sit outside Datavant’s network; those are the requests someone still has to chase.
3. **Check where records land.** A named integration with your case-management system or EHR, or an API with webhooks for anything else.
4. **Ask for audit evidence.** A SOC 2 report or HITRUST certificate and a BAA before the first authorization.

## Is Ciox the same company as Datavant?

Yes, in practice. Datavant now offers Smart Request, the requester portal whose product sheet still lists Ciox Health contact details, and calls itself the nation’s largest release-of-information company \[6\].

## Is ChartSwap part of Datavant?

Yes. ChartSwap is Datavant’s Legal & Insurance vertical, serving insurance carriers, law firms, TPAs and providers \[7\].

## Can a law firm stop using Smart Request?

A firm can hand its requests to a retrieval service instead. The hospital still releases through its ROI vendor, so a service such as Tavrn requests through Datavant’s channels on the firm’s behalf and covers every provider outside them \[1\].

## What are the alternatives to Datavant for hospital release of information?

MRO, Verisma and ChartRequest each offer outsourced release of information for providers \[2\]\[3\]\[4\].
